855 Drive
Do you wish the Tubescremer had more gain, less mids, and more low end?  If so, you will love the
BYOC 855 Drive.  The Ibanez OD855 is a close cousin of the Ibanez TS808.  While the circuits are
very similar, the OD855 is more than just a modified Tubescreamer.  The BYOC 855 Drive kit is
almost spot on to the original.  We use the 4558D chip, 1N60 germanium clipping diodes, and
tantalum caps in all the same places as the original.  The only difference between the BYOC 855
Drive and the original OD855 is that we got rid of the FET bypass circuit and replaced it with true
mechanical bypass, and we replaced the 1uf electrolytic caps in the signal path with higher quality
film caps.
The orignals are selling for insane amounts of money now.  Here's your chance to try out this other
legendary Ibanez effect for a fraction of the cost.

There are many modifications you can do to the 855 circuit.  Visit our parts store to get the parts to try
out some of these mods:
  • B2k or B10k potentiometer - Using a smaller value pot for the tone knob will reduce its range,
but many people think it's a good trade off for the way it allows for more finer contouring of the
    higher frequencies.
  • 220k resistor or higher - Replacing the R9 100k resistor will give you more gain.
  • 1uf tantalum cap or higher - Replacing C6 will give you more low end.  The low end response of
the 855 is already pretty good, so unless you change R9, you probably don't want to mess with
it.  Increasing the value of R9 will slightly reduce lows and increase highs, so you'll want to use
a larger value cap for C6 to compensate for this.
  • .01uf film cap - If you find the stock 855 circuit to be a little too piercing, replacing the C9 2n2
cap with a larger value will cut more highs.
  • .22uf(C3) tantalum cap, 1k(R7)resistor, 220ohm(R5) resistor - If you prefer the tone stack of
the TS808, using these values, and removing C4 will give you more of the Tubescreamer EQ.
  • 2 x 1M resistors - Replacing the R2 and R12 resistors with a higher value will increase the
impedence of the circuits input and output buffers.
  • Diodes - The kit comes with 4 x 1N4148 diodes for you to experiment with.  The 855 circuit is no
different from just about any other distortion or overdrive circuit that uses clipping diodes, i.e.,
higher forward voltage diodes will give you a less fuzzy and less compressed sound.
You may want to customize your kit by adding some of these items to your order
Note:  BYOC kits come complete with everything you need to build a pedal, but you may want to add a
different style of knob or different color LED status light
