I just finished my Champlifier and it works perfectly on the first try! I'm picking out speakers right now. I put a switch between the yellow and green heater wires so I can choose 4 or 8ohm without resoldering.

Anyway will this thing fit into one of the weber cabinets? Weber warns that they're designed ONLY for weber chassis. If it does work what size? I'd like to use a 10" speaker.

Also it just occurred to me that it might be neat to pop a reverb tank in this thing... would I basically be creating an effects loop for that or is it as simple as bypassing the speaker/input?

I bought a tweed Champ cabinet with a 10" speaker baffle from Marsh Amplification. Got a Weber Sig 10AS alnico speaker from them, too. Excellent prices and great customer service, from my experience.

I'm hearing lots of stuff about 10" speakers not sounding good with champs. Thoughts on that, sir?

i found a seller on the bay named sorrycharly. i got a 12" solid pine unfinished cab for $105. he didn't have any listed with a 5f1 size chassis cutout and a 12" speaker cutout like i wanted, so 1 short email and whoala... i should have it in the next couple of days. i found some great linen fabric for the grill covering at the fabric store today, got my weber speaker on order, found a great old leather handle at one of my secret stores. hell i cant wait, i'm so excited for this build. my first since my recent first born. a beautiful daughter that takes all my time, and i don't mind.
picks will be posted...

Geez, mine sure sounds good to me & everybody who's heard it says the same. Where are you seeing these reports? I'd like to read them myself.

I've heard the same about 8" speakers too. I have both, and they both sound bitchin' :) I think it might be because I find tones I like with what's in front of me, where some people chase a sound in their heads. Both philostophies (reference?) work for sure, but mine works for me...

Shit, I even hooked up my Champlifier to my 12" cab and it was awesome. Tweeds are dark, and bigger speakers accentuate that a tad, but a low wattage big speaker sounds great with a Champ!

So how do I choose between a 4ohm and 8ohm speaker. What is the sonic difference there? Do higher resistances lose high frequencies?

For this amp, there is little to no difference between a 4 ohm and the same speaker in 8 ohm as long as you hook up the power transformer using the 4 ohm wire to the 4 ohm speaker or the 8 ohm wire to the 8 ohm speaker. Using an 8 ohm speaker with a 4 ohm transformer is OK but you will get less power. Don't use a 4 ohm speaker with an 8 ohm transformer.

Do I have that right, Fellas?

yeah, you can run a higher ohm speaker than the output suggests, but you just loose power. as you said, don't do it the otherway around.

Sonically, basically no difference. Driven with the same power, they'll both produce the same sound level, other factors being equal. The important thing is to drive the speaker from a source designed to match that same impedance. In general, I think you'll find that 8 ohms will give you a bigger selection of speaker choices and more flexibility in multi-speaker cabinet combinations.

yeah, i like the 8ohm speakers because you have many wiring options in multi speaker situations. 2 in parallel for 4, series for 16, 2 sets of series wired parallel for 8. with 4ohm you're limited to running series configurations because not much guitar stuff messes with 2ohm

Lots of 2R amps actually
But anyways I agree about the 8R statement.

Good info. Looks like I will get the 10 inch weber from the Marsh site along with their nice looking cabinet.

Slightly un-related cab question. I got a Weber 5F1 cab that looks killer and seems to work great. I've noticed that at higher volumes when playing on the neck pickup the vibrations from the speaker seem to rattle the back panel and will cause a buzzing sound. If I put my hand against the panel the noise will stop. The panel is currently sitting as tightly against the chassis as is possible, but there is obviously still a slight gap.

Does anyone have any recommendations on a material I could use to place between the panel and the chassis to dampen the buzzing? I was thinking maybe some foam tape or something, but figured I would ask here first.
