Jonny Greenwood. It's well known he used a Marshall Shredmaster (2 actually) and he may be part of the reason those pedals are so expensive now. I'm wondering if I can get close to that Radiohead sound circa The Bends-era. I'm not looking to directly copy his sound, I'm not in a Radiohead cover band, I just want to be able to get that gnarly distorted tone that sounds like it's about to rip through your speakers. Any advice? I feel like I'm going to need more than just a Shredder for that..

Well i built my first one last month and thru my Sovtek mig100 and with the pedal dimed in volume and gain it absolutely screams. Yes it is the best start but those tone you speak of are...well in the fingertips as they say. I do know from watching live Bends-era footage he has a midi pad on his guitar hooked up that does some of the sick pitch shifting and he also had a slew of gear...he has reportedly used them on his boards through out their existence and has called it a "go-to"! You GOTTA do it!I am just saying you could stack up three of those things and it wont be as HOT as his tone gets...but you will be ripping! or SHREDDING i should say :)

awesome thanks man. I was going to build it anyway and I know there's a whole lot more that goes into his tone I just wanted to use that as a basis for comparison. Now if I just had another 5 grand to drop on gear... And to complete the Greenwood ripoff I found a Fender deluxe 85 for $100 on CL I'm going to check out on Wednesday

SWEET! I am stuck in the bends era with tele's and my Sounds more like a Marshall than my Marshall Sovtek Mig100!!! If only we could pick up a pair of AC/30's each to round out that tone!!! I saw a set up where he had a pair of AC/30s and an 80's era JCM*800 (or maybe a JMP) all cranked!!! They are the tightest band live so i highly recommend looking up some of the British and German TV performances floating around the net! What i would give to have been there...For me its like from theBends to OKcomputer kind of guy i am. GOOD LUCK :D

Same here Bends and OK Computer are definitely my favorites with Hail to the Thief up there as well. I actually use an AC15 as my main amp, but I got that before I was real into radiohead. I know they're amazing live I've watched a lot of the videos. My friend saw them live and said it was life-changing, I can image it would be. To REALLY complete the coincidental Jonny Greenwood phase I'm in right now I just moved into a house right next to a street called Greenwood Ave. Granted, I didn't pick this house (I'm not that much of a fanboy) but still a strange coincidence.

The shredder will easily put you there. There is nothing really special going on tone-wise with greenwood. Meaning, you could emulate his distortion with lots of different pedals and amps.
Its his playing technique that makes him stand out.
The deluxe 85 is simply a clean SS amp (no dirt, it sounds horrible). You could get better tones from a vox vt+ or a peavey bandit. Owned it and was one of my least memorable amps. I liked it cause jonny used it. I remember hating the red knobs too.

I also had his tele.

You dont need 5 grand. Just grab any type of tele, a shredder a decent amp, maybe a phaser or an envelope filter and a whammy pedal and your good to go.

I was under the impression he used the Deluxe 85 for his distortion and the Vox for his cleans, could be the other way around, though, I'm not sure. I never wound up getting it so I can't say from experience. Glad to see it wasn't such a great amp since I missed out on it. And definitely excited to hear I can get a good bit of his distorted tone from the Shredder. I'm ordering my starter kit tonight and that will probably be the pedal I grab with it!

Yep, he used the shredder into the DLX 85 if thats what you meant. The DLX 85 on its own has very weak/poor distortion.

Does he still use the Rat or was that just for a short stint?

There is no real evidence that suggests he used one on record. Im sure he messed around with one. Thom had both a Rat and a TurboRat.
I have actually talked to Plank, their guitar tech via email and he only mentioned the shredmaster and boss pedal for gain. He has a cool blog "planks blog" where he talks about RH stuff.
