Does anyone know of a good voltage doubler? I have used two different DIY ones both of which produce a high pitched whine. Better yet, anyone using one on their BYOC optical compressor? As this would be my intended use. Godlyke Iso-Pump looks like it could be cool...Anyone?

Which ic are you using?
Try bridging pins 1 and 8.

Wow, you can do that? I am using the 4558.

I think that might be your problem.
You need a MAX1044 or a TC1044.

The 4558 is not a charge pump and cannot be used as one.

Use an LT1054 instead of the 1044 chips mentioned above. These have a max input voltage of 16 volts. The 1044 chips only have a max input rating of 10.5 and 13 volts respectively. The 1054 is less likely to blow if you plug an un-regulated power supply into it that typically has an output of 12 to 13 or more volts.

Does the LT1054 have the oscillator boost Stephen?

If I'm not mistaken it's on pin 7 like the 1044 chips.

Yes, pin 7 is the oscillator, but does it have the oscillator boost, that renders the whine out of ear-shot, achieved by connecting pins 1 and 8 as on the max1044 and tc1044?

Well as far as I can tell it does not. Glad you pointed that out. I've been using the TC1044 because of it's higher max. input voltage. Someone recently told me about the 1054 having an even higher max. input but I haven't actually gotten around to using one yet.

To the OP it looks like the TC1044 would be the chip to use instead of the MAX1044 or the LT1054.

I think the trick with Charge Pumps is to always use a Zener diode for protection. 9.1 volts will do you in all cases, IMO. Whether the chips can handle 10, 12, 16 or 345.7 volts, why chance it. They really are sensitive to this, from my experience.

Also, look for the "s" type Charge Pump, by looking at the prefix......1044SCPA...good......1044CPA.....bad.

TC1044 is generaly a lot cheaper too! :D

You can also use CMOS hex inverters as charge pumps. Check out this bad-ass article from ETI:
http://www.gyraf.dk/schematics/Voltage_ ... _gates.pdf

I've tested it, and it definitely works. And some guys at the madbean forum have used it to create a high-voltage tube pedal, so I assume it is also quiet.

In my test, using only two of the six inverters gave me +22v from an input of +9v. Too bad they don't make 2- or 3-gate ICs for inverters. I think to save space, I'm going to do a project for this but using SMD parts.

Sorry. I misunderstood that question. My opticomp is using 4558. As for the charge pump, it is TC962EPA.

Can someone elaborate more on using Zener diodes. I will be converting 9v to 18v using a TC1044SCPA and bridging pins 1 & 8. Zener diodes that I will be using should be at least 9.1v because that is what my supply is putting out right? I do not totally understand the rest of the Zener specs that I should be considering. Little help? Possibly a Mouser link? Thanks again everybody.

What exactly are you building?

Generally a Zener works by setting finite number to amount of voltage that will pass through it. If your IC can only handle 10volts max, you could easily kill it by accidentally hitting it with a 12, 15 or 18 volt power supply. A 9.1 volt will limit any possible voltage, if you put it between your PS and IC to 9.1 volts. You'll be protecting your $2 IC with a $.02 diode.

I am trying to build a quiet noiseless voltage doubler to mount inside my BYOC optical compressor. I am using the AMZ FX V-Dub circuit. However, it is too noisy and have tried many filtering recommendations to no avail. Then I was reminded that fixing the source of the problem is better than working around it. So here I am digging for better components to hopefully build usable circuit.

MadBean's road rage is tried and true. It does positive ground too.
His Q-vibe project has the voltage doubler part on a satellite board too, I think I've got a spare if you'd like it.

Thanks for that link! Great info. I appreciate the offer, but it seems more practical for me to order from Austin Texas rather than you shipping it to me in the US. I think I will still try to salvage the AMZ that I have.
