Hi guys, my first of two builds (so far), was really happy with it, worked straight away and sounded awesome until......I decided to remove the guts and give the case a paint job! :(

Is there a PDF or other doc 'trouble shooting' file available so I can start trying to rectify the problem?

Pedal-wise the light is on but nobody is home, can hear a faint 'swirl' when adjusting trim pot but nothing else.

Is there anything in the circuit that I may have/can be blown? How do I test?

Appreciate any and all help : |

Cheers,
Regan.

Hi Regan - glad you liked it when it was working :) More than likely what happened was you had a cold or loose joint somewhere which was making a connection when it was boxed up, and now has been 'disturbed' as it were during the disassembly process. When you say 'faint swirling sound' do you mean a swirling in the background white noise through the amp, or a partial signal from your actual guitar playing? The reason I ask, and this is consistent with the scenario you describe - if it's the background white noise, it's one of your offboard connections most likely and you can focus on re-flowing those connections.

If it's a partial guitar signal, that happens to be faintly swirled, it's more likely on board. If so you can start by re-flowing your joints, especially any which look dull or blobby. I was just doing this last night with my own Phase Royal build - and the joints under the pots are a little tricky. You have to bend the PC mounted pots out of the way to get in there.

Best reference on building there is, is Stephen's tips which is stickied at the top of this forum.

Thanks TD, I thought I may have blown something on the board!
The swirling sound is electronic white noise, when the phaser is switched off the guitar comes through nice n clear.
You mentioned onboard & offboard connections.....what does that mean? I'm thinking onboard as being resistors, capacitors, ICs etc & offboard being input/output jacks, switches and anything else connected by wire, is that correct?

Cheers,
Regan.

That is correct. Onboard is literally anything on the PCB, offboard is everything else. The symptoms you're describing - signal in bypass, no signal when engaged - is most likely one of the connections to or from the PCB (either on the footswitch or on one of the jacks, or of course their associated connections to the board).

You can reflow all of the joints to be safe. To pinpoint, you can use a wooden pencil or chopstick (something non-conductive) to poke at each wire when the pedal is plugged in and engaged. If poking anywhere causes popping or static, or causes intermittent signal to come through - you've found your culprit. Really it's safest to just reflow them all anyway.

All good thanks, after resoldering the wires to the in/output and power jacks, turns out I missed a solder in the foot-switch! /: )

I purchased the knobs locally (Perth, West Oz) from an electronics store however, check out http://www.mammothelectronics.com they sell 'em there too.
