Presenting the May Queen from runoffgroove.com

Image

This treble boost/overdrive screams harmonics !!!

The changes I made from the original:

Q1 - MPSA 18 for a 2N5088 - not much difference.
R3 & R4 - not critical (I use these because I have a lot in stock)
C2 - the treble was a bit too much for my taste - went from 470pF to 1nF

I've shown my voltage measurements (in blue) compared to ROG's measurements (in green). I adjusted the 10kΩ trimpot to get the same Q3 drain reading.

The original was designed as a one knobber - I added a treble cut circuit to the output of Q3. If you add this mod and want a bit more treble, then reduce C7 from 22nF to 10nF. If you don't want this mod then disregard P2, C7 and C8, connect C5 to the drain of Q3. The output is very hot. I have a Pevey backstage with the pre-amp on 2 and the pedal volume at about 10 o'clock and that is more than loud enough for home use. If it is too hot for your liking, add a 20kΩ - 30kΩ resistor between C5 and lug 3 of the volume pot.

The layout differs slightly from the schematic. The schematic C7 and C8 are layout C5 and C6. Schematic C5 is layout C7 (Sorry !!)

To remove the treble cut circuit, DO NOT cut a11 - c11. Remove C6 and C7 from the board. Make C5 100nF. Take the output from e14.

Nice one! I like ROG projects! I built the Supreaux Deux and run it at 18v and its loud as hell, so much so I'm going to put in a switch to run at 9v and see that tames it a bit.

Loud !! I'll tell you what loud is. I can turn the pre-amp on the Pevey to zero - leave the EQ on an 8,5,8 setting, turn the volume on the pedal to maximum and still have a decent enough signal to jam with.

Mine's very quiet! Well, silent actually.

With a signal probe it's clear up to Q1 and is much louder leaving Q1, much quieter but clear at the junction of C3 and Q2, then nothing audible out of Q2. I think there's a tiny signal at the drain of Q3.

Q1 voltages are not far off those listed. Q2 E is 0v, Q3 D is set right with the trimmer. Q2 C & B and Q3 G & S are all in the region of 5v, which looks a long way off.

I've checked everything visually and can't find anything. Any ideas?

Yep, treble checked all the cuts. Any other ideas?

Hey saxon enema
Mine was dead silent at either end of the trimmer, so f@ck the DMM and adjust it with guitar and amp plugged in.
J201 can be a bitch to bias you know mate. So just listen.
You will notice when it comes alive, so once again, heed my warning of ear protection.

Failed again you Viking scum! Methinks the lack of output from Q2 is a big clue. Gonna try a backlit photo to check for naughty solder bridges next.
