Ok, so I did a search and found a few mentions of it, but I have searching for some early David Gilmour (Live At Pompeii) type of fuzz for solos and stuff like that and figured between listening to pedal demos on youtube and gilmourish.com that the fuzz face would suit me just fine. I really like what I hear from the Sunface, but is it worth the extra money to buy the Sunface or do you guys think that a little TLC put into a BYOC ESV would do the trick just as well? I AM kind of leaning towards the BYOC just because of the money (and I enjoy building pedals), but no totally sure yet. Thougthts?

I'm no Gilmour expert, but I thought he used various flavors of Big Muffs, not Fuzz Faces. Not so?

I always thought so too. If you're interested check out Gilmourish.com (/.net?). It actually shows pictures of a dallas arbiter fuzz face for Live At Pompeii and the tour for Dark Side and then Muffs for later (Animals and The Wall). I am building a triangle kit, so if I (and the site) are wrong, I should have both my angles covered there though.

If you are trying to do it on the cheap, why not just build yourself a fuzzface on perf or vero. Or get an inexpensive board from GuitarPCB? I did one of the GuitarPCB fuzzface builds and used CJ's fuzzface project specs from his blog. It sounds great. I dont know if it sounds like Gilmore (again, the muff thing). But it sure sounds like a hot rodded fuzzface. I have one of the GBOF boards coming, and plan to do the Meaty fuzzface thing with it.

Certainly an option to consider. I wasn't so much worried about price between that and the byoc, just that I don't know if I feel like dropping the cash on the sunface. I do like that option. But you say that it sounds pretty good? I would be going the BC108 route. Which did you use?

I think you'd be pretty pleased with the BYOC as is, and its easy with a bit of experience to mod it to Sunface type specs. IIRC its only an external bias control thats different anyway? Remember that as the trannys are socketed you can swap out silicon and germs as long as polarity matches.

I'd go with what Bjorn says on Gilmourish as he has just spent too much time researching his stuff.

Didn't Live at Pompeii predate the Muff? I can't recall when Matthews came up with the Muff.

Kaycee - good information. Forgive my noob-ness but what is IIRC?

TNBluesHawk - I agree. That dude has way too much time on his hand and there is a lot of really good pics. I don't know if Pompeii predates the Muff (I assume you mean predates when the Muff existed), but there are definitely pics of the Fuzz Face in the sand at Pompeii. Not trying to beat a dead horse or sound arguementative though.

I am trying to find a dead/broken/cheap Dunlop fuzz face to scrap the internals and mount the byoc or whichever I decide to do because I always loved that enclosure.

Another stupid question I guess: what's the difference between the ESV and the ESV2? Everytime I look that up around here I always take it that the ESV2 is a totally different circuit, but is it actually different or just an upgrade with more pots of the ESV(1)?

IIRC = If I Remember Correctly, hey! stranger things have happened

Good luck with the FF discus, lots of folks want them, Dunlop could probably sell more cases than pedals if they wished (they don't sell em).

I don't know the difference, can't find the schematics to compare. I like the Pompei tone as well, I've actually been there and stood in that amphitheatre, fantastic place to visit, that whole part of Italy is wonderful, except Naples

Been there? That's awesome. I always dig the ancient cultures and especially architecture, but as amazing as ancient Rome and it's colonies were, I think in that auditorium I would just be "Holy frak, Pink Floyd stood on this same spot and rocked the HELL out of the wind and sand." Haha. You kind of have to lose perspective in a situation like that. Ha.

I know exactly what you mean about the Dunlop cases. I found one on ebay for $8 and it had 4 days left. Next day up to $40. Oh well. As much as I love the look of that case, I think I am just going to go for a regular enclosure (Hammond) and put both the Fuzz Face AND my BYOC Muff clone in the same case. Two fuzzes that you just absolutely cannot go wrong with and space-saving too!
