Hey all,
I've been loving reading all the topics on the board. I'm new to BYOC and I've built two pedals thus far and am about to do some painting decorating. Anyhow, I accidentally plugged in my EHX Deluxe Memory Man power supply (24V) into the Classic Overdrive. Of course, it's not working now. Instead of going crazy and re-ordering all the capacitors, IC chip, resistors, etc., I'm wondering if someone in the know could tell me what I possibly blew out. It was a moment of carelessness and I feel pretty dumb already, but am hoping it'll be an easy fix. I don't know much about using the multimeter and am not sure how to check if everything is working. Everything looks fine and nothing looks blown out. Help when you have a sec.

Best,

Tony

The op-amp is almost certainly toast now. I'd replace that first and hope for the best. If any of the caps had blown you would have heard and smelled it.

My brother-in-law blew his OD2 out by plugging in a wrong polarity wall wart. I fixed it. I replaced all the electro's and IC (can't remember how many there were) and diodes if I recall right.

But I could see the "stuffing" coming out of the electro's. If those look fine, like Stephen says, you may get lucky with just an IC switch out. I don't think you would have ruined any of the film caps or resistors.

LED's look good if there are any in there? Other diodes look good?

Do you have a spare IC?

Edit: Now that I think about it your electro's are probably fine assuming they are not the 16v ones. If 25v that will be close. If you were to test your 24v wall wart I'll bet it would read more than 25v coming out of that thing.

Good luck!

I think it's the OP amp as well. I live in NYC. Do you think there might be a place in the city I could go to where I could buy one? It'd save me having to wait for shipping and all and I could sleep better knowing I'm not as dumb as I act :) Thanks all. If I reorder all the caps, diodes, etc from the BYOC site, you think that would do the trick? Thanks.

I'll let some New Yorkers answer that question but I would hold off on ordering a bunch of parts just yet if it was me.

What IC is it?

4558D. I'm calling local guitar shops. It looks like someone has one. I'm gonna buy it, swap it out and hope for the best. If that doesn't work, then I'll be buying the caps, maybe diods, and transistors. Would that be the move?

Do you have any pics you can throw up for us to look at? Good clear shots of those components?

What is the voltage reading on the electro caps? If more than 25v and you don't see where they popped I'm leaning towards those are fine. Film caps are rated very hight so you are fine there. Resistors I would think you are fine.

I'd get some trannies from that same guy I think if he has them.

I just looked at the part list. Man, I don't know. It might just be that IC like Stephen said. By the way I'm not one of the genius's on here  Stephen is though

Not sure about the diodes.

So, in a nutshell, I'd do the IC first and if nothing, swap out a couple trannies and then try it and then the diodes. If nothing then for sure I would post up some pics. Might as well throw up the underside too for kicks.

There might be some other dudes who have seen a pedal damages with too much voltage who might know.

We are of couse assuming that it was the PS that caused it to stop working. Stranger things have happened than plugging a build in one day and it works the next it does not.

If that dude doesn't have that IC I can mail you one tomorrow if you want. Just let me know. I've got plenty of those.
