I get lost every time I go to Montreal! The city is great, but getting in/out always perplexes me.
I went once for a long weekend with my wife earlier when we were dating. We had exactly this trouble. Getting around on foot from our downtown hotel was awesome and super easy. Except finding that blasted underground shopping mall thing, still have no clue how to get to it....

But getting in to the city and getting out, not so much fun. Reminded me of like a miniature part of Manhattan driving. Too many lanes, always in the wrong one, things are set up in blocks but you still can't get there from here- because being in the wrong lane has forced you onto the interstate or a tunnel or something. Too funny, at one point when we were driving looking for someplace to eat after we had checked out of the hotel, my wife was driving and unable to parallel park in traffic so actually stopped the car, double parked on a busy city street, got out and switched with me so I could parallel park. The Montreal peace officers were kind to us
Anyway yes absolutely great city - and much more kind to non-French speakers than they are in Quebec City
