technical wankery that sounds like garbage, yes, but it's still damn impressive to watch.

A friend told me they were capos, although I'm not sure.
But it was victor (the bassist) that impressed me the most. A bassist friend of mine was explaining his slap technique to me; apparently he hits the string 3 times in 3 different places on his thumb, all in one swift movement.

Its a trick that tappers use to dampen the other strings. They are just hair ties.

You are a man after my own heart Ryder. Stevie Wonder is one of the greatest musicians ever, in any genre. People who don't own Songs in The Key Of Life have a musical hole in their lives.

I believe the guitar player is Reggie Wooten. Victor's brother. He was awesome too. Supposedly taught Victor how to slap.

This is Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush playing "Poppy". Frank is one of the best and most under appreciated (not to mention virtually unknown) guitar players ever. The man's records just don't do him justice. He has to be seen LIVE to be believed. He is in my top 5 all time favorite guitar players.

Poppy

And what has to be the smokinist version of Johnny B. Goode ever...

Johnny B. Goode

"Rob, top five musical crimes perpetuated by Stevie Wonder in the '80s and '90s. Go. Sub-question: is it in fact unfair to criticize a formerly great artist for his latter day sins, is it better to burn out or fade away?"
hehe

Great drum solo. Second video is nothing special IMO.
I would rather watch this... http://youtube.com/watch?v=BwA5tneNcF4

Stevie Wonder's last album, A Time to Love was pretty good. And hey, the eighties were tough for a few musical heroes. And no it is not better to burn out.

Frank Marino's music + Boris Valejo's imagery :: http://youtube.com/watch?v=XoHbKogYHzM
Oh, Yeah. Frank is the man.

I like Dragonfly better, but I used to do this song (Strange Dreams) when it was new.
Very cool to pull off in a bar. People freak. 8)

This is really cool!!! This brought back many memories of my angst-filled early teenage years of FM radio listening in the late 70's to ealry 80's. Not to be too sticky, but some of the artwork looks more like Frank Frazetta than Boris Vallejo :)

I knew it wasn't all Boris, but I couldn't remember Frank Frazetta's name at the time.
I love that whole 'Edgar Rice Bouroughs Mars fantasy' genre.

Cheers

Thanks for that link Stephen. It prompted me to watch a couple other Frank Marino videos out there. 'King Bee' is particularly impressive! I'll add Mahogany Rush to my 'list' for CD shopping now...

Frank's early recording aren't the best. The LIVE versions on FM & MR LIVE are much better versions IMO.
Image

"Child of the Novelty" is worth seeking out for the song "Guitwar" alone. According to the liner notes Frank uses his guitar and a Fender amp (IIRC) to recreate an entire air raid sequence. You hear sirens going off, machine guns firing, bombs falling and exploding, the works. And he does it all with just his guitar. The song "Electric Reflections of War" on the LIVE recording is a partial version of the song that is a real crowd pleaser LIVE. Frank was heavily into acid (LSD) in his younger days. Reading the story (or whatever the hell it is) inside the album cover pretty much confirms this. It is some of the most bizarre writing you'll ever read. Whether Frank wrote it or not I don't know for sure. It has something to do with the strange art work on the cover. Read it and you'll see what I mean.

I saw Leo years and years ago. Man that guy can play the snot out of an acoustic guitar. I've got a few of his recordings I haven't listened to in a long time. I may have to get them out and give them a listen again.

'6 and 12 String Guitar', while unimaginitvely titled ;) , is probably my favorite of Leo's recordings of the 3 or 4 I've heard.

I went and found a youtube clip of the song 'Guitwar'. It's just a still of the ablum artwork, but the song is pretty wild. Amazing what can be done with a guitar, really.

Guitwar
