if you're into effects make sure to check out Static, the guitar player for OURS. i love OURS, and their new record is being released in march, the first to feature Static on guitar, but you can hear samples on their website as well as bootlegs thru killtheband.com.

I love this thread :)

For those of you who are into punk, here's a link to the Danish punkband Hærværk http://www.haervaerk.org/mp3.php They've uploaded their songs for free download, they aren't in the best quality, but then you know how that band sounds.

I'd recommend Statens Myrderi (it means "the governments killing") and Pop Svin (I can't really translate that in a good way, but "pop" means "pop" as the music style and culture, and "svin" means "pig", so it's an anti-pop song)

What about Blues, what would be good Blues?

Danish punk - that's awesome! Need to check that out.

Good blues - what blues isn't good blues? ;) I cut my blues listening teeth with the Alligator Records collections. Crucial (insert something here) Blues series - Crucial Guitar Blues, More Crucial Guitar Blues, Crucial Acoustic Blues, Crucial Harmonica Blues, Crucial Texas Blues, Crucial Slide Guitar Blues... The list goes on. Pretty sure I have all of them, and they all rock. Plus their anniversary collections are awesome too. their comps got me into Buddy Guy, Junior Wells, 'Steady Rollin' Bob Margolin, Lonnie Mack, Johnny Winter, Hound Dog Taylor, Son Seals, Lonnie Brooks, Fenton Robinson, James Cotton, Coco Montoya, the list goes on and on... Can't go wrong with any of the Kings - BB, Freddie, and Albert. And, check out Guitar Shorty. An unsung hero - word is a teenaged Jimi Hendrix (Jimmy James at that time) used to sneak out of his parents' house to see Guitar Shorty.

Check out the 'Bandana Blues' with Beardo and Spinner podcast. Comes out weekly and it's free. Been introduced to a lot that way as well. Spinner's from The Netherlands and has a lot of European blues acts. Cool stuff.

I would be remiss if I didn't mention Damon Fowler. Can't get his discs in record stores, at least not nationwide. You can order them from his brother at his website. Ask Red C who goes out to see him locally often. Unbelievable guitar player, great singer. Incredible emotion in his playing.

Edit - how the crap did I neglect to mention Robert Cray? Damn. Robert Cray is critical listening.

Thanks a lot. Tell me what you think of Hærværk :)

Here's one *I* forgot to mention:

Sweet Water - "Superfriends"

It came out in 1995. It's one of the best rock albums I've ever heard. And some of the best overdriven guitar tone I've ever heard. There are a few tracks in particular that make me sick with tone envy.

If you're into electronic music at all and like the modern psychedelic scene, check out Shpongle:
http://www.shpongle.org/index.php?menu=music&subpage=1

The first album you can download for free. Really trippy stuff.

Location: Maine, the way life should be...
Lots of good stuff here, lots of eclectic tastes.
Big +1 on Wilco, Billy Bragg, and Wilco with Billy Bragg...

Also, any Clash. If you don't own a copy of "London Calling" you should be ashamed. Can't go wrong with any Clash album, really, just avoid "Cut the Crap" at all costs. For pure variety, try "Sandinista", funk, punk, dub, sheep, it's all in there.

All the kids playing Rock Band in my house has gotten me to take a second look at the Stones... Take a listen to Midnight Rambler from "Get yer ya ya's out"...

Ronson/spiders era Bowie...
And, Bowie's favorite band, the Pixies. There is a great double cd out there, one disc live, covers their whole career.

Also I forgot one for you punk fans:

You gotta get some Ebba Grön, a fantastic late 1970s - early 1980s punk band from Sweden. They rule.

Here's a little background:

Also, as an update, I've been listening to Dinosaur Jr. (love it!) and Cold War Kids (kick ass!). I appreciate all the tips, and I'm working my way through as many of the bands listed as I can. Thanks!
