i lifted this post off another local board here in canada, jambands.ca

anyways, heres the link

http://consumerist.com/362926/do-coat-hangers-sound-as-good-monster-cables

i find this hilarious, and i know ive read some of you folks around here saying that monsters just arent worth all the extra $$, that a cable is a cable is a cable, for the most part, i do realize for home theatre app's its a little different, i just found this funny, thought someone here might get a kick out of it as well.

Quote:
Unknown to me and our 12 audiophile buddies, prior to the ABX blind test, he took apart four coat hangers, reconnected them and twisted them into a pair of speaker cables. Connections were soldered. He stashed them in a closet within the testing room so we were not privy to what he was up to. This made for a pair of 2 meter cables, the exact length of the other wires. The test was conducted. After 5 tests, none could determine which was the Monster 1000 cable or the coat hanger wire.

cheers, now i have to go shovel a foot of snow off our steps, porch, etc etc

This is so damn funny - LOL. I mean, it's one thing to say that an old McIntosh 2300 power amp is going to sound better than a cheapo Wal-Mart jam box, but come on - LOL. If you want to hear other some guys argue about gear like this, go to the Yahoo group called gearheads. It's a group for Grateful Dead fans that like to discuss the band's gear. I've never heard so many arguements in my life about what year JBL made the best speaker and what year they didn't - LOL. One thing though; they don't knock BYOC much at all. It's real funny when they get snippy and snobby with each other too. I can't say that I haven't learned anything from the group, but I'm mainly there to be entertained - LOL.

I use monster guitar cables. They last longer and don't have the crackle sound when you move around. On the downside of them, they seem to twist up into a ball and get tangled.
I'll try the coat hangers though.
For speaker cables, I just make them out of heavy round extension cords in bright colors (so not to confuse them with guitar cables).

No way would I use these

I use monster simply because anytime one gets screw'd up I can send it back to the company for a replacement.

You know, this article will soon have everyone using coat hangers for cords...

That's hysterical - shows you the over-the-top some of these people can get.

This is even more hysterical -

Purchase Direct or Find a Dealer
Anjou Speaker Cable
3 foot pair - $2750
8 foot pair - $5250
12 foot pair - $7250

:?:  No problem! I'd like 6 please.

I *love* this kind of mojo-hype debunking!

Of course, to the audiophile, this just proves how crappy Monster cables are. The $1200 boutique cables, on the other hand, still sound superior.

Not to be a pain in the buttocks, but you can TRAIN your cords to lie in nice loops. Take one end and place it in your right hand, now as you bring a loop up with your left hand , twist the cable slightly as you bring it to the top of the loop in your right hand. Continue doing that until its in a neat loop. Store it that way and always do it that when you are done. It won't tangle on you then. Buy a new cable and train it from day one and it'll behave much better, trust me.

They can do all the tests they want, but I'm certain the human ear cannot detect an audible difference between the most expensive and the cheapest 10' cable. That being said, I use Monster cables when I play live (which isn't often these days) because I know they won't crap out on me on stage.

generally, audiophile quality cable is exactly the same stuff as good quality cable, you just pay 4 times the price for the word 'audiophile'.

I like van damme cable, you can buy it on a reel and add your own jacks for a third of the price of the ready made boxed ones they make

I agree, I think its sort of like Digital cameras, as I'm certain that most people's eyes cannot tell the difference between 3-4 or 7.0+ MegaPixels, but then again, since I am not that much or a photo nut, and maybe I am wrong, but to me in this digital-age, a lot of the differences between an older versions and the newly revised version are more easily seen on spec sheets than with the actual products these days...

AFAIK the only time the higher resolution with the camera makes a difference is hwen you blow it up to a larger sized print.

And I agree about the audiphile cable thing, for as far as I've tried with the 'monster gold' series. Never spent more than that, that was bad enough.

While I don't think you can hear the difference between a $XX and a $XXX cable I've got a cable from ratshak that works as a really bad fuzz. As for monster cable I just don't think they're all that rugged. I think for most of us its worth spending a few $ to make sure the things last awhile. And the biggest joke is that some monster cables are directional even though though the signal is AC.
