all this talk of pop punk makes me fell that i should point out that true punk music is not a genre and never has been, it is an attitude which is why alot of the original punk rockers were actually country artists, they were doing their thing decades before the sex pistols started strumming

Melody Gardot - Worriesome Heart. Sparse and luscious.

The Posies - Flavour of the month - from 'Frosting On the Beater' - great power pop.

Billy Bragg and Wilco - hesitating beauty - from mermaid Ave, songs of Woody Guthrie - lovely record.

maria mcKee - precious time -sin to be saved.

Having been a teenager during the punk thing, i see punk as an attitude and not a musical genre or fashion look. I also see it as a positive stance - if you don't like something change it, make up your own mind and have the guts to stick with it and speak out against hipocracy.

Of course! In fact, I think "On Avery Island" showed up here on one of my earlier posts. Brilliant music... Mangum is both a genius and a lunatic. My band likes to jam on Gardenhead every now and then, and whenever I play solo acoustic shows I throw a NMH cover into the set.

Nice!

And, crucify me if you must, but I don't think My Chemical Romance is bad at all. I like the way they kinda tried to bring back the epic rock opera thing. They remind me of a popish-punk version of Queen on some of their songs.

Bring it back? Guided by Voices were doing it in the nineties. That not too long ago.

There's a lot of truth to this statement. The term was first coined in seventies, I think, which is why hardcore and all its offshoots are classified as "punk," right?

Oh My God! One of the greatest bands ever! Great songs/hooks. Excellent guitar playing/sounds.

And the vocal harmonies...absolutely perfect. Even better live. It doesn't get better then the Posies for my money. I have seen no band more times live than them.

My band is on the recently released Posies tribute album "Beautiful Escape: Songs of the Posies Revisited". It was an honor, but kinda of sad because at the end of the day all the bands fell short of their genius and magic.

The guitar playing on "Coming Right Along" is what it is all about to me. Tone, energy, spacious, sad and joyous all at once. Everyone should check it out.

Also, Jon and Ken are 2 of the funniest, sarcastic, nice and musically open guys you will ever meet.

While we're talking about 'punk' here's what I'm listening to;

http://www.myspace.com/thebloodykissoff

Punky R&B Garage Rock'n'Roll Bolton style. I'm not in the band but I was the one who sat behind the desk and pressed 'Record'.

They're loud, they're trashy and often shambolic - if they weren't so lazy they'd be a lot bigger than they are...

I like all of their stuff, and am mistified as to why success eluded them??? I got into them via listening to Teenage Fanclub, but never saw the Posies as such other than when they backed Alex chilton on the Big Star comeback. well done on being on the tribute album, i often enjoy those kind of things, I'll look out for it!

As we are hosting the punk revival here just been listening to 'caught licking leather' by 'the pissed jeans' on recent subpop giveaway disc from Mojo magazine - heh! heh! what a racket!!

and also been giving proto punk freaksters The Pink Fairies a spin with 'Uncle Harry's Last Freakout' and 'Wargirl' from 'Never Never Land'.

Hey Nazz, if your reading this?? I seem to remeber a rumour that The Damned did a cover of The Fairies 'The Snake' way back in the day?? any truth in that?

Appropriately enough their 1st album was called "Success" and their last album before their "reunion" was called "Failure".

You should really check out these guys:

http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fu ... D=29368763

I'll admit that I'm a bit biased as they're from my home scene, but ther'ye real good. They've been together for over 20 years, and have only had one personnel change. They're a real cool bunch of guys. They were into Grindhouse-type flics way before Tarantino and Rodriguez breathed new life into the genre. They're also huge John Waters fans and have one of the coolest collections of old toys and boards games I've ever seen - LOL. Almost every element of their interests makes it into their song writing. The real pisser is that I almost got to be in this band back in 1989. The original guitar player, Danny "Roadkill" Thompson, was going to leave the band and pursue blues and rockabilly. He ended up deciding to stay though. I was bummed, but at he same time, I'm glad he decided to stay. He's a really good player and he made them sound great. He did eventually leave the band though. They still sound great with their new guitar player, Ace Hardware, but I still carry the torch for their early albums with Danny on Guitar.

i think one of the biggest problems with punk being a genre is that it was term thought of by record executives to help them sell albums, so alot of bands ended being called punk bands even if they didn't consider themselves to be, and some the things that actual punk bands did still don't rate when you compare them to others, how many of those bands started forest fires and nearly wipe out a colony of endangered condors and still tell the government where to stick it afterwards when they sued him for damages? the sex pistols have nothing on johnny cash

Yeah, I totally want to go! I had to wait on buying tickets because I wasn't sure if I would be here or Stockholm that week. Now that I know I'll be here, I went to get tickets... everything is so far back you might as well be in the parking lot. Good seats are selling now for $120-$250 each!

If anyone comes up with an extra ticket (and isn't looking to make a big profit), keep me in mind! :D

Totally. And the Black Sheep's first album was kick-ass, too.

Listening to Do Make Say Think's fantastic instrumental album 'Goodby Enemy Airship THe Landlord is Dead'. Very cool and kind of out there. Lots of great effect use. Kind of like Explosions in the Sky.

Totally agree. I have that album as well. Every time a song comes up from either on shuffle I'm like "damn, this is cool. Chill, but deep."

Sex Pistols - "Pretty Vacant" from the album, "Never Mind The Bollocks...Here's The Sex Pistols!".

30+years later, this album still gets regular attention in my playlists :)

Cause it's a great album! Just listened to that in the car over the weekend before my CD shopping excursion.

This morning on the ride here, also wholly inspired by this thread - Dinosaur Jr's 'You're Living All Over Me'. The next to last track is, well, out there, but you gotta love the cover of the Cure's 'Just Like Heaven'. Great stuff.

I was listening to "Green Mind" last night. J is the man. He looks 70, now though. Right now, I am rocking out to Superchunk's "On The Mouth" on my lunch break.

Superchunk! I love them! Pandora is playing me a Love and Rockets song. Before that it was "Jumping Fences" by The Olivia Tremor Control. I'm listening to The Apples In Stereo Radio. I'd never heard L&R before, but I absolutely adore The Olivia Tremor Control and The Apples In Stereo are one of my favorite bands.
