Vampire Weekend - Class tunes, ace mellotron-like sounds and a really pretty, ultra-clean chimey guitar sound. Almost steel-drumish at times.

The Heritage Orchestra - I can't beleive humans are capable of doing this. In a nutshell theres two guy's composing music on the fly,
I'm talking dot's on staves on a computer notation program called sibillius. They then send the dot's to the conductor and players via computer screens. The conductor then takes this music and effectively, remixes it and hands it to the players as he sees fit. Mix that with some tasty breaks and improvised electronica from the bays and you have, imo, one of the most astonishing and innovative musical accomplishments that's taken place in my life-time anyways.
Check them out - http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=HY54PDPEvvc

Ooooo and off the subject but I saw Leonard Cohen in the flesh a couple of weeks ago :D yey me!

Now playing... Blake Babies, "Innocence and Experience" and while I listen to it, I would like to take this opportunity to profess my love (or lust?) for Julianna Hatfield.

3 have been on the rotation around here lately ...

Danger Money by UK. Eddie Jobson has got to be one of the most incredible unsung Hammond players ever.

And it's really weird hearing Bozio doing total prog/odd meter drum work when you think of what made him famous (Missing Persons). Total contrast in styles. He went from the progressive controlled-chaos of the 9 minute long "Carry No Cross" to the pop-stink-junk of "Walking In LA". Guess we all gotta pay the bills! He went back to "progressive fusion" in the late 90's and early 2k's with Black Light Syndrom .. an instrumental 3 piece with Steve Stevens (Billy idol) on guitar.

.. and ELP's 1st album. Tank is incredible.

... and (a new one for me) .. Particle. They're a "blue smoke jam band" .. kinda like String Cheese Incident/Phish but edgy-er, and less phishy.

Fd. From the *weird side of the fence*.

That would have been outstanding! I saw them on TV .. "Particle: Transformation" it was called. About 90 minutes worth. Satch sat in with them (that guitarist for Particle held his own fairly well in their 70's styled "duel"), and later Robby Krieger sat in too.

Very cool show. They've got their own twist on jam.

Bc..

If you didn't already know, Eddie Jobson played with Zappa for a bit in the mid 70's. Get the 'Live In New York' double CD and you can hear some very good examples of Jobs with FZ. Ironically, Terry Bozzio is drumming all over this one too. The Brecker Brothers are blowing some mean wind on this side too :)

Heard and forgotten!! Thanks for reminding me. Another of my fave keyboardists came from Zappa .. Derick Sherinian. Didn't know Bozz was w/Zappa.

I'd been an Emerson freak for years until I heard Danger Money. Jobson's mastery of the C3 is astounding. He makes it *say* things I'd only heard tiny whispers of in Emo's playing. A bit more melodic and less bitonal chordings than ELP, and simpler compositions to boot, UK had a more accessible sound. And where Emerson was all about 4ths, Jobson's improv's were all about augmented chords. That Hammond friggin screamed.

Yes, I'm a prog geek.

Fd. :)

'Live Rust' by Neil Young, classic double live album.

'Black and White' by The Stranglers.

'LAMF' (lost 77 mixes) by The Heartbreakers, essential punk/sloppy R'n'R.

'True Nature', by Janes Addiction from 'Strays' - they still got it!

Indeed they do! Just catching up on this thread after a road/camping trip this weekend, in which I had around 12 hours of driving to listen to whatever. The (future) Mrs. Tonedeaf and I loaded a 48 CD book, and chose CDs by flipping pages and pointing a finger at random. This way there was no 'bias' on what we picked to listen to. Jane's Addiction's "Ritual de lo Habitual' came up, and DAMN that's a good album! At the time it came out (I was in high school) I bought it because I liked 'Been Caught Stealing'. Lucky I did - great album.

Guys, Ted Leo is so awesome. Shake the Sheets isn't his best album according to others, but I certainly like it a lot.

'Book of Days' - title track from that album by The Psychedelic Furs. Swirling gloomy guitars and a 3 packs of B&H a day voice!

'Steppin out' - 'Beano album' by John Mayall's Bluesbreakers featuring Eric Clapton. Grail of tone.

'Listen, Listen' - Sandy Denny, self titled. Lovely voice, patchy album though, Richard Thompson plays on this.

1965 - album by The Afghan Whigs - Motown-grunge anyone?

I've only got Shake the Sheets and Hearts of Oak. The latter I can't seem to get into very much. I'll try Tyranny of Distance, though.

Right now I'm listening to June of 44's Tropics & Meridians. Excellent band. They're considered both early post-rock and math rock.

I was just listening to The Best of Curtis Mayfield. Now listening to Ladytron although that may not last as my girlfriend has just turned her nose up at the first track

Earlier today I was listening to These Games and The Moment After by a local band called The Planets. You can hear those tracks and more by visiting - http://www.myspace.com/theplanets

I'm not connected to the band apart from becoming friends with them due to liking their music so much. Oh, and I built the El Loco! Looper for their guitarist.

That's funny Naz; most of the Americans here probably haven't got a problem with that song but over here in ubercool Britain we're all too ashamed to admit to what we really, really like listening to. Obviously, being in the band that I am in means I have no shame at all so I'm proud to admit that I love ABBA (I'm straight!) and Cilla Black's Sixties stuff (honest, I'm straight!) but I'm convinced loads of people just won't admit that they love a bit of Pilot or Clemetine by Mark Owen.

And I do.

P.S. Although I did used to justify my liking of the Mark Owen song by stating that Dave Gregory of XTC plays guitar on it...
